Question by DK: How does one transport lunch to school and still be totally cool ?
My 5th grade, 10 yo son doesn’t want to take his lunch box to school in fear of looking like a nerd. The lunch box is plain, no charactures. How else can he transport the lunch and still be totally cool ?

in a paper bag. really. i work with 5th graders a paper bag, or have him by the school lunch.

A lunch bag/ sack. Tell him it doesn’t matter what others think.
Let him pick out his own “cool” lunch tote from the store for starters. Then ask his opinion on what “cool” foods he would like to take with him. All the kids love things like “Fruit Gushers” or “Fruit by the Foot” so pack these things along with his usual sandwich and chips or whatever. Kids are very independent at this age. So the more you can let him think he is making all the decisions, the better. Basically, you give him his options and let him choose. Its a win-win for everyone.
I agree with the plain paper sack/ or buying lunch at school. i was a very shy child never wanted and extra attention so I just bought my lunch at school. Good luck 🙂

I AGREE WITH WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING LETTING HIM CHOOSE WHAT HE CARRIES THE LUNCH IN. I would defintaly let hime try this. If not give him the brown bag. Also you can let him choose lunch also like he gets this if he eats this and that. A lunchable would be nice too. Whatever he likes.
If not let him buy lunch it costs about the same if not cheaper sometimes.
try paper bags. im 18 and have been through high school and honestly i absolutely hated school lunch. the food is disgusting. nasty chicken patties and fries and gross pizza with a texture of corregated cardboard. tell him its more cool to take a lunch than to buy it.
What are the other 5th graders using? My 5th and 6th graders still use lunch boxes, but so do their classmates. When we can’t find our lunchboxes, we use brown paper lunch bags (though they are kind of small if you want to send a bev. and tend to break if you have an apple or other large fruit), or plastic grocery sacks. The downside of these options is the fruit bruises and the lunch gets warm, maybe even dangerously warm. String cheese and go-gurts can be frozen, and this helps to keep the lunch cooler. Or put the lunch in a paper bag inside the insulated lunchbag in his backpack. At lunchtime, voila! His lunch is cool and he is too!
lots of kids carry lunch packs. maybe instead of a plastic box you get him the insulated lunch packs grown ups use.

If you have a small ice pack that can go into the bag with it to keep the lunch cool, it doesn’t really matter what he uses. Lunch at school is usually pretty early anyway, it’s not like it has to keep all day. Put it in a wood box if he wants that. Or just put it all in one of the sections of his backpack.
I would also suggest dropping by the school to see what other kids his age are bringing.
NOT paper bags, they’re terrible for the environment.
